LENS

Today I was thinking about perspective and focus.

How we see the world, and ourselves in it.

Everything in life can be viewed using different lenses I suppose.

Some might call it a glass half full or empty.

There are those that want us to be pollyanna all the time ..

(I’m refering of course to the story of the young girl who was insanely positive even when paralysed!)

Particularly those that we juggle a million balls for, whilst slowing losing our own way.

Our own focus.

My instagram 50-something algorithmic feed, is inundated with midlife gurus, asking us to bath in positivity.

It’s exhausting.

Whilst personally I have always tried to be hopeful. Positive. Good.

Generally life has other ideas of course.

A consistent stream of curve balls, creating a lack of focus (or is that just me?).

So, much like my old eyes need a lens to read, we should maybe have a set of life lens to help see our way sometimes.

Unfortunately for us women, particularly as we get older, we may be tempted to choose the crap lenses, as opposed to the rosy tinted ones of our youth.

The lenses that are smeared with years of bullshit.

The lenses that are smeared with years of thinking we are imposters in our own lifetime.

Not enough.

Not good enough.

Too much.

Wrong turns.

Lack of direction.

Dead ends.

Stop signs.

Blurry lines of um and ahh ..

Priorities lost and any personal direction diverted to others.

So maybe we need a new set of lenses.

Not rosy, not shitty, not even realistic (because God that would be far too hard to take.)

Nope, these lenses are, I don’t know… Midlife veri-focals.

Some days you need a reality check (I certainly do).

Some days you need to be told you’re bloody amazing.

Some days you just need a glimmer of hope.

Some days you need someone else to say “I got this”

Or “I got you”.

But most days you need to just fuck it.

To give yourself a break.

To choose the different choice.

The difficult choice.

To accept yourself and realise your own epicness.

Warts and all.

You have got this. Whatever this is. Even if you can’t see it yet.

Because choosing ourselves is so often difficult, when in reality it shouldn’t be.

Not in a gratitude journaly-shit kind of way.

No.

But simply realising we’re all just human.

This is it and us and life, in all its haphazard techni-colour glory.

And it is rather fucking fabulous.

As are we.

All the mad unfocused parts of us.

So embrace it all.

As honestly a few blurry edges can be quite forgiving in the harsh light of day.

So today, I am blindly heading into what I have dubbed the fuckit fog with gusto.

With my mystical midlife veri-focals intact.

Choose your lens wisely.

Because being good is overrated.
